Environmental Education & Team Building Program

We offer a number of programs which can be either lead by camp staff or by leaders from your group. Please see detailed the following list of programs available to your group. If there are other programs that you would like to see offered, please call, as we are happy to discuss them as possible options.

Life and Death in the Forest

This activity assigns animal roles to students as they take on a predator or prey position within the forest environment. Be a predator and stalk your meal, or become prey and feel the frightening reality of the hunt. Learn about animal adaptations, strategies to remain alive and the balance of nature. 1½ hours, Camp Mendocino or school/group staff.

Owls and their Adaptations

Students will identify owls, their adaptations and their role as a nocturnal raptor. They will then dissect an actual owl pellet. A great hands-on, indoor activity. 1-2 hours, Camp Mendocino or school/group staff (An additional charge of $3.00 for each owl pellet).

Night Awareness Hike

Experience the forest in complete darkness. Astronomy, nocturnal animals, night vision, is the main components of the activity. 1-1½ hours, Camp Mendocino or school/group staff.

Confidence/Team Building Course

The core of our Group Initiatives Course is where each group is presented with various obstacles, some more physical in nature than others. While success is the focus, we do not determine the group's success based on completion or speed, but rather on whether or not they make behavioral progress as a group. There are various levels of difficulty among the elements, and through creativity and flexibility, we can adapt just about any obstacle to be appropriate for almost any group. 1-1½ hours, some Mendocino staff required.

Mendocino Sensory Development Awareness Trail (MSDAT)

Sensory development trail provides students with the opportunity to utilize four of the five senses as they follow a blindfolded trail through the Camp Mendocino woods. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the environment that surrounds them. 1-1½ hours Mendocino staff or school/group staff.

Climbing Tower

A 35-foot climbing and repelling tower that can be used as a separate activity or as an element of the Group Initiatives Course. Participants are on what's known as dynamic belay, a system which allows students, in addition to pushing themselves physically, to face and hopefully overcome their fears. 15 students; 1½ hours, Mendocino staff required.

High Ropes Course

For 7th grade students and older, this is an extensive and intensive session which takes place 40 feet above the ground. An excellent team building activity and a logical extension of Climbing Tower where students support one another through encouragement and at the same time have an experience they will remember for a lifetime. 3 hours for 12 students, Camp Mendocino staff required, and extra charge required for additional instructor.

Orienteering

Learn the skill of finding your way in the outdoors with a compass, under the supervisor of a camp staff member. Utilizing several courses, students will put this knowledge to use in the fields and forests of Camp Mendocino, 1½ hours. Camp Mendocino or school/group staff.

Pre Team Building Course

This session will get the students ready for the Team Building Course by participating in group-oriented activities geared toward working together. Students will learn some of the skills required for the more advanced cooperative learning elements. 1½ hours, Camp Mendocino or school/group staff.

Recreational Activities

We also offer a basketball and volleyball court, large jungle gym, amphitheater, archery range, tether ball, TV lounge and ball field. We have our own supply of sports equipment which is available to all groups.
